How Basketball Drills Can Improve Performance

Basketball is most definitely a demanding sport. No one would ever suggest that it isn’t. The mere fact that you would be running up and down the court for four periods definitely requires a certain amount of conditioning. And, of course, you are not running up and down the court in an arbitrary manner. You are doing so to score points or prevent the other team from scoring. That means your game has to be sharp and you must do what is needed to avoid tiring or losing your reflexes. Ball Handling

Unlike bowling, kids have to deal with the same basketballs that the adults use. A basketball is a bit heavier than other balls and its large size can make it difficult for kids to handle. Focus on drills that help kids understand the main mechanics of basketball which involves dribbling and passing the ball to other players. An effective dribbling exercise involves players dribbling the ball between their legs.

A common drill involves two people moving from side to side simultaneously while passing the ball to each other. Ball handling drills ultimately encourage teamwork and having good control of the ball means that you are doing what your team expects you to do when they pass you the ball. Divide the team up and have them work with other members so their passing skills get even better.

Shooting

Controlling the ball well won’t get your team very far if not all players are capable of scoring. Shooting drills should have more emphasis since the ball handling skills can take less time to master. If time is short, you should encourage kids to practice shots from the three-point line. These shots are difficult to take especially if you are in the middle of a game but once you notice these kids making those shots, they should have no problems with any shots on the paint.

A fun way to encourage multiple kids to participate in an organized manner is to set up a game of HORSE. One player will start the game by attempting a shot in any location the player wishes. If the shot misses, the next player will have the freedom to pick his or her shot. Once a player makes a shot, all the other players participating in the game have to take the shot from the exact same location. Any players that miss the shot will get a letter “H” which symbolizes their first “strike”.

Any players that make the shot do not get a letter so they can stay in the game longer. After all of the players attempted their shots, the ball goes back to the person who called the shot and the game continues. Any succeeding misses will result to the letter “O” and so on until the word “HORSE” is spelled. After the word forms, the player is eliminated.

For these drills to be effective, you have to let these kids practice consistently and let them play some short games so you can see how they implement their skills. Remember that you are working with kids after all so you shouldn’t expect them to master these skills after a few days of practice. Fortunately, the teamwork aspect of the sport should serve as a motivator for everyone to be interested with practicing. Once the team members are very comfortable with practicing, their live games should be just as comfortable and that is essential for winning basketball games.
